Frequently Asked Questions

Ashiatsu Massage Therapy dates back centuries, but at the same time it’s still a relatively new form of massage therapy to a lot of clients—which means I get a lot of questions. For that reason I have gathered answers to the most frequently asked questions.
Check them out below!
What is Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage?
Ashiatsu, also known as “barefoot massage,” is a unique deep-tissue massage technique where I use my feet to deliver broad, soothing pressure. I hold onto overhead bars for balance and control while also providing the perfect amount of pressure to help release tension, improve circulation, and leave you feeling amazing.
Who is Sparkle Barefoot Massage?
I am! My name is Emily Martin and I am a Registered Massage Therapist. You can learn more about me on my About page.
Where did you learn to do Ashiatsu Massage?
I thought you’d never ask! I earned my certification at the Canadian Institute of Ashiatsu Massage Therapy. Here I learned how to safely and effectively perform barefoot massage using overhead bars for balance.
Does it hurt?
Not at all! Unlike some deep-tissue massages that can feel a bit pokey or painful, Ashiatsu uses broad, even pressure, which feels more like a deep stretch or hug for your muscles. What’s more, I work with your comfort level to ensure it feels just right—never too intense.
Is it safe?
Absolutely! Ashiatsu is incredibly safe and effective when performed by a trained therapist (like me!). I’ve gone through specialized training to ensure I can use this technique safely and adapt it to your body’s needs. Whether you’re new to massage or a seasoned pro, I’ll make sure you’re comfortable and cared for throughout your session.
Who is Ashiatsu best for?
Ashiatsu is ideal for anyone who:
• Loves deeper pressure in their massages.
• Suffers from chronic pain, muscle tension, or knots.
• Needs help with flexibility or recovering from workouts.
• Wants to relax and de-stress on a whole new level!
However, it might not be suitable if you have certain medical conditions like osteoporosis, recent injuries, or if you’re pregnant. Let’s chat about your needs before your session to ensure it’s the right fit.
Will I get walked on?
Kind of, but it’s not as wild as it sounds! I use the overhead bars to control the pressure and movements, so it’s not like you’re being stomped on. It’s all about smooth, gliding motions that feel luxurious and deeply relaxing.
Do you use your hands at all?
Yes! While the magic of Ashiatsu comes from my feet, I may use my hands for certain techniques or to balance things out if needed. It’s all about creating the best experience for you.
Do I need to prepare anything before my session?
Here’s the deal—just show up ready to relax! Wear something comfy, and be sure to hydrate before and after your massage. If it’s your first time, I’ll go over everything with you beforehand so you know exactly what to expect.
How do I know if the pressure is right for me?
I always check in with you during the massage to make sure the pressure feels good. Since Ashiatsu allows for a wider range of pressure (thanks to my body weight), I can easily adjust it to match what feels best for you. Just let me know if you’d like me to go lighter or deeper—your comfort is my top priority!
Is this different from other types of deep-tissue massage?
Totally! While traditional deep-tissue massages use hands, fingers, and elbows, Ashiatsu uses the larger surface area of my feet. Because of that, this allows for deeper, more even pressure without the discomfort some people feel with pointy tools like elbows.
What should I do after my massage?
Relax and enjoy the bliss! Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, and try to take it easy for the rest of the day. If you’re feeling extra loose and relaxed, that’s a good thing—it means your body is thanking you!
How often should I get Ashiatsu massages?
This depends on your goals. If you’re dealing with chronic pain or tension, weekly or bi-weekly sessions might be best. For maintenance and general wellness, once a month is a great option. I can help you create a schedule that works for you!

What if I’m nervous about trying Ashiatsu?
That’s totally okay! It’s normal to feel a little unsure if you’ve never experienced Ashiatsu before. I’ll explain everything, answer any questions, and make sure you’re comfortable every step of the way. By the end of your session, I’m pretty sure you’ll be a fan!
Is Ashiatsu Massage Therapy covered by OHIP?
While OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) does not cover massage therapy, many extended health insurance plans do. If your plan includes massage therapy provided by a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT), which I am, you may be eligible for reimbursement.
I recommend checking with your insurance provider to confirm coverage and any requirements, such as a doctor’s note. If needed, I can provide receipts for your claim submissions.
If you have more questions about insurance or receipts, feel free to reach out—I’m happy to help!
Is Ashiatsu Massage Therapy tax deductible?
Yup! Although Massage therapy is not covered by OHIP, it may be covered by your private health insurance if you have. Whether your massage therapy services are covered or not, it’s good to know that expenses related to massage therapy by an RMT, like me, can be claimed on income tax.
Should I keep receipts for my Massage Therapy?
Knowing that massage therapy is tax deductible in Canada is super helpful for those who pay for medical expenses out of pocket. I can provide receipts for your claim submissions when services are paid for.
The hardest part? Remembering to keep your receipts to make the process of claiming massage therapy and other services simple at tax time.
